Sigma Alpha Epsilon held its second annual Shocktoberfest. It lasted Thursday til Monday, starting with SAE’s Shocktoberfest Halloween Dance on Thursday night (8:00 to 11:00), October 22, 2009, in the Granite State Room.
Shocktoberfest is celebrated all throughout the Greek community on the UNH campus. Shocktoberfest is a week celebrated around Halloween each year, where brothers and friends gather for a variety of social events. Last year, hosted by former Philanthropy chair, Ben Watson, Shocktoberfest was celebrated throughout the week by the brothers of NH Beta.
While each sorority strives for a spot on SAE’s annual Shocktoberfest trophy, the brothers at NH Beta throw events for them to compete throughout the week. A squad of brothers are designated to each sorority house in the beginning of the week, and become a part of their team in the competition. The following are a few of the events that were held during past Shocktoberfests;
Hat Run – If ever you were on campus and there was an odd man seemingly sprinting for his life, holding onto a pharaoh hat, all while being chased by sorority girls, you may have witnessed Shocktoberfest’s Hat Run. Each brother is designated a different hat, based on seniority, with each hat holding a certain amount of points. The brothers wear these hats throughout the course of the week (all the time, except for inside of any building) and the sororities of UNH compete to grab as many as they can and return them to the house. At the end of the week, these points are accumulated and put towards their overall Shocktoberfest score.
Egg Toss – Nothing too fancy. Each sorority gathers on the lawn in front of SAE for an egg toss. Winners of each round are split across larger distances each additional round they succeed in catching the egg.
Halloween Dance – The final Shocktoberfest celebration. Each year, SAE hosts a costume party in the Granite State Room. A costume contest is generally hosted as well as the announcement of the winning sorority, and holder for the year of the Shocktoberfest Bowl Trophy.
All proceeds from Shocktoberfest benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and are purchased from any SAE brother or at the MUB ticket office. Mark the date on your calendars and start picking out costumes for each year.
