The brothers of NH Beta gathered at the chapter house Saturday, March 6, 2010, to celebrate its first Founders Day event since its rechartering. The reception was held by our Alumni Chair, Matt Arsenault, and the NH Beta Alumni Association was in attendance. Brothers were met with a variety of heavy h’orderves, ranging from stuffed mushrooms to tomato basil and mozzarella salad. The event lasted from 6-10PM, brothers brought dates and friends to share in a casual night in celebration of our fraternity.
During the event, brothers celebrated their first year as the Phoenix chapter, and reminisced about the old SAE with alumni George Roberts ‘63, Clint Bean ‘67, Josh Merva, and Vermont Beta and NH Beta’s chapter advisor, Dick Hooker ‘55. Ben Watson, chapter chaplain and history major, gave a brief history of the NH Beta, as our chronicler, Bryan Higgins, put on a presentation of pictures that displayed overhead. George Roberts gave a speech about the newly established Alumni Association, looking ahead towards the many goals that it has set forth to accomplish.
Dick Hooker, during a special ceremony, presented the most prestigious SAE undergrad award, the Order of the Phoenix, to former recruitment chair, Greg Halama, for his outstanding achievements, being responsible for the recruitment of the vast majority of the Phoenix chapter’s current undergrads. NH Beta EA, Scott Haskell, was awarded with the EA badge, as Hooker marked the reestablishment of the tradition of handing down the EA badge from year to year.
The Richard M. Hooker Memorial Library was dedicated to Hooker, as a wooden plaque with a black face and gold text was handed to him during the event, and will be hung in the library in his honor. As our library had been furnished with new dark mahogany bookcases and a conference table, brothers were given the chance to take alumni on a tour of the library, and join Hooker in the cutting of the ribbon, as we opened up the doors to our new accomplishment as a chapter.
Thanks to the help of our undergrad crew, staffed by brothers ready and willing to offer a helping hand, Founders Day will continue to be an annual event, for the purpose of commemorating the founding of our fraternity, celebrating the brotherhood and all the memories that we share in the bonds.
